“Traditional Leisure in a Globalized Age: Selling and Consuming Japanese Illustrated Books in 1880s Shanghai,” in Wagner, Rudolf G., Yeh, Catherine V., Menegon, Eugenio, Weller, Robert P. (eds.), Testing the Margins of Leisure Case Studies on China, Japan, and Indonesia (Heidelberg: Heidelberg University Publishing, 2019)
The volume Testing the Margins of Leisure: Case Studies on China, Japan, and Indonesia (2019) pushes leisure studies beyond Euro-American frameworks by highlighting Asia’s pivotal role in shaping global leisure practices. My chapter, “Traditional Leisure in a Globalized Age,” pioneers a transcultural art history approach by uncovering how Japanese illustrated books were selectively redrawn, adapted, and sold in 1880s Shanghai under Ernest Major’s publishing enterprise. This case demonstrates how authenticity, mediation, and cultural circulation redefined artistic exchange in East Asia, positioning my research at the forefront of rethinking global art markets and transcultural knowledge production.
