The catalogue accompanied a landmark exhibition in Paris that introduced French and European audiences to the dynamism of late Qing and early Republican Shanghai painting. My essay highlights the transnational dimension of this artistic center by tracing how Japanese popular culture, especially Hokusai’s imagery, informed the innovations of Ren Bonian. By situating Ren’s work within broader East Asian exchanges, the article underscores how Shanghai artists absorbed and reinterpreted Japanese models, reshaping local visual culture in cosmopolitan ways.
