A Boundary-Crossing History of Chinese Art

This book gathers nearly twenty years of the my studies, spanning from the Song dynasty to the late Qing. Despite varied topics, the unifying theme is how boundary-crossing and cultural exchange shaped Chinese art. Organized into three sections— What is Foreign?, Media and New Frameworks, and Choices and Transformations—the book examines shifting notions of the “other,” the role of media in enabling new artistic forms, and the selective adaptation of foreign elements. Rather than a closed tradition, Chinese art emerges as dynamic, open, and continually reconfigured through encounters with the outside. This perspective reframes Chinese art history as inherently boundary-crossing, offering new conceptual tools for understanding its evolution.
